Things as of late
Hey.
Long day. It’s been busy getting ready for baby. I feel like I have a million projects that have to get done before he comes so each evening is spent working through my to-do list. The latest project is re-finishing a beautiful custom bookshelf that Andy designed and built. After months of…. work (translation: procrastination) I’ve finally set this Sunday as my drop dead date to get them done. Yesterday I did the final sand and today I started the third and final coat of polyurethane. It feels good to finally be close.
I bring this project up because I’m learning about setting goals. I mean really starting to experience it. (I hope my boss isn’t reading this!) I’ve had a couple of personal projects now that I finally mapped out and gave myself a goal to reach, and much to my surprise I actually reached the goal, even when I wasn’t sure if the goal was realistic. It’s turned into a great motivator.
Oh! I almost forgot. I’ve got something new to share! Brady Sark has finished the percussion to my marching band opener! I’ve even made a page to showcase the show. Check it out!
As some of you know, I’m really getting in to photography and when something catches my eye, I like to take a picture of it. So the other day after our morning pug walk, we noticed some rather strangely tall ice crystals on my car. Some of these were over an inch high. Check it out:
Look at the lenght of these ice crystals!
Ok. Three more photos. First, I couldn’t sleep one night, so I thought I’d take a couple pictures of the moon. See?
And last but not lest, as many of you know, Whisper has a habit of picking up the nearest toy and bringing it to you when you first come into the house. One afternoon she got a hold of what we affectionately call a “beeber” (which is a stuffed animal attached to a little blanket.) The result? Cuteness overload. See for yourself:
Ok, that’s enough for now. Thanks for following along!

More Pictures!
I don’t have much time tonight, but thought I’d post two new pictures. The first one I took of Betsy
and the second she took of me.
Both have been given that little something special by Bobbi! She’s a wonderful and talented photographer in Indy, that we met at a wedding. Her site’s amazing (bybobbi.com) and her blog even more so. If anyone in Indy needs a photographer, she tops the list. She actually saw the pic of Betsy on Betsy’s myspace page and did a little photoshoping on it for her blog. Then when Betsy commented on how cool her editing was, she offered to do it to a couple pics for us, just for fun!
Oh, and the new pic on my home page is compliments of Betsy and Bobbi as well.

Bluewater by Betsy
It’s Sunday afternoon and my perfect husband, John, is busy cleaning bathrooms (I told you he was perfect!) so I decided to sneak onto his blog and post an update. Here’s the latest:
Last week we took some photos of John for his professional use and had MUCH to much fun snapping away. Here’s a sampeling of my photography skills and of John’s “photogenic-ness.”
Of course, while we had the camera out, we had to snap some belly pics as well. I’ve been feeling pretty good but I”m definitly feeling all of the things that go along with the third trimester. People definitly know I’m pregnant now when I’m out and about, which is actually pretty new. This is a nice size to be but I’m pretty scared of how much bigger I’m going to get! So these photos were taken around week 27 of my pregnancy.
So our nursery is almost finished with just the closet shelves to finish painting and to hang. We also need to prep and paint the closet doors as well. However, the painting I did of the 20 by 20 inch canvas for the nursery wall is complete. We painted an accent square on the wall to “frame” it. We still need to hang the three wall hangings (canvases covered in fabric) on the wall as well.
We also had a beautiful shower thrown by my mother and sister last weekend so I photographed some of the baby items we received.
We got our mobile too, but it clashes too much with our nursery to put it up just yet. : )
One of John’s co-workers found these little slippers with a King on them! How sweet! (I’m sure they will stay on a toddlers feet for about 3 seconds…)
Last, but not least, we recieved a Bumgenius cloth diaper we had ordered online in the mail on Friday. We have done a bunch of research on cloth diapers and we think we really like these diapers called Bumgenius. They are adjustable so they fit babies from 8 lbs. up to 35 lbs. and from what we have read are really easy to put on and work really well. We tried out the diaper with some water, and it seemed to be ok, but otherwise, I guess we’ll figure it out this winter when Baby King breaks it in. ; ) So far we are happy with our educated, yet unexperienced opinion and have created an online registery for cloth diaper stuff at www.cottonbabies.com. If you have a baby at home or might someday, you should check out the website. It’s amazing the advances they have made in cloth diapers just in the last few years.
Here’s how they work:
Here’s a Bumgenius diaper in it’s smallest size.
You open it up, load it with an insert (or remove the insert to clean) and there ya go.
Here’s a Bumgenius diaper at it’s largest setting.
This past weekend John and I went to Indy for the Band of America Competition. It was my first band show experience and it was really cool to finally get to see more of John’s world.
John’s done cleaning, so I better go!

The Ultrasound!
I’m just going to come right out and say it:
We’re having a…
I can’t give it away yet! Here’s Betsy getting ready for Baby King’s closeup.

Here we go!
Before I tell you the gender, I’m going to tell you a little bit of the story. So Betsy had a routine appointment today with our midwife, Andrea. Now, from day one, Andrea has suggested we wait until 28 weeks to have our ultrasound, but this past week we just couldn’t take not knowing any more, so Betsy called and scheduled her ultrasound for this afternoon.
As we’re sitting there in the exam room and told Andrea that we wanted to do the ultrasound today, she started again talking about waiting, how the pictures are better, etc. Of course Betsy and I trust her, so we started to wonder whether we were going to go through with it today or not. Andrea proceeded to measure Betsy. A confused look crossed her face as she measured. “Hmmm. A little bigger than expected…” She’s not a woman of many words, by the way. She she got out the doppler and started poking around listening for the heart beat. And poking around. And poking around. Now I’m now doctor, but even I could tell she was looking for another little heart in there.
After ruling out twins, she agreed that today is a good day to do the ultrasound afterall, just to make sure everything’s ok.
So after a brief lunch at the Bagel Station, we headed back to the hospital for our ultrasound.
Betsy got on the table, exposed her cute little belly, got jellied up and before I knew it, little images were flashing on the screen. Literally 10 seconds in, the tech declares “It’s upside down, see there’s the head” and in the same breath, “boy!”
Ok what? Did that really just happen that fast? Sure enough, we are lucky enough to be brewing a little baby boy! He weighs in at 1lb and 13oz. (Which some of you may know is only 3 lbs under what I weighed when I was born.) He’s about 1 week ahead in size, and everything from his spine to his heart to his lip to his toes looks good. We’re so blessed. Oh, and he has long legs, so said the tech. That trait he gets from me.
The tech was great, after taking a host of measurements, she spent as much time as we wanted showing us our baby head to toe. Then she switched to the 3D ultrasound and did it all over again getting us the best pictures she could of our little boy’s face. I have to admit, the most magical part of the whole experience was watching our little boy open and close his hands and open and close his little mouth. It was just amazing.
So I wanted to share a few pictures of the little guy. These are all 3D pictures. They give you a pretty good idea that there really is a baby in there. The bumpiness in the picture is actually caused by motion by the baby. He was getting his exercise during the process.
He was like this a lot, covering his face. I think he’s a little shy.
How cute are these little feet?
Thanks for letting me tell our story. Betsy and I are both delighted to have a healthy active little baby boy on the way. And thank you to all of you who have been so supportive along the way.
With love and another 4 months to go, John and Betsy
One more thing…
Check out this trim:
Betsy and I stumbled on a great little technique to give you beautiful crisp lines when taping, and it doesn’t take much longer to do. If you want details, just fire me an email and I’ll explain.
I’ve got to go get ready for our first baby shower!

No more blue!
I’m finally done painting the nursery, or at least the trim, the door and the walls, AND we’ve our crib and furniture in, so I thought while there was a pause in the action, I’d take a moment to do a little documentation.
Without further ado:
And finally, just for grins, a face only a mother could love.
Actually, a face both the mother and her husband love. This pic is of Whisper, who gets just a bit spoiled, but how could anyone resist a mug like this?
Much Metta!
John
The Closer
And finally, the closer. Aka Celebrations!

And for your viewing pleasure, how about a before picture of our nursery? I have spent the entire evening covering this Pepto blue, so what you see here is no more. Thank goodness.

So Adorable!
I just had to upload this beautiful picture of my wife and our soon to be! We’re right around 23 weeks and her nesting urges are in full swing. Unfortunately, I’ve been so busy writing music, the nursery isn’t quite in full swing, but I’m working on it!
My latest music project is a full marching band for MSC, and I’m finally starting to round the corner on it. I’m going to be posting some of it this weekend, since the opener and ballad are pretty well roughed out. This has been a huge project for me. For those of you who know me, I’ve always battled finishing music. I’ve got plenty of ideas and I take them as far as they want to go in a sitting to two, but ever since college it’s been a real struggle to actually write something from beginning to end. SO… this piece has been a great opportunity to confront that head on. And it has to be playable too. I really feel like I’m becoming more and more of a real composer as I start to really do battle with my artist’s insecurity and to confront writers block. (What composer doesn’t struggle with that at some point in their process?) So I’m working through it, having fun, staying up late, and just writing as much music as I can.
Thanks for following along. Check back before the end of the weekend for some actual musical samples.

Pictures from CA
I’ve done a horrible job of updating my blog as of late and I have no excuses. Lately I’ve been working on original music for a half time field show for Marching Show Concepts. This is actually the very first time I’ve ever tried to write a complete work for marching band, even though I’ve been around it for decades and working directly on music by other composers since starting at MSC. It has turned out to be an incredible challenge. I’ve been focused primarily on the opener and have about a minute finished, but it has been definitely a labor of love, with emphasis on labor. Poor Bets has heard me come out of my studio several times declaring I’m in the wrong profession and that everything I write is garbage. But I’m pushing through it and the opener is finally starting to take hold. I still have a long way to go, but I finally feel like I just might actually be able to make it happen.
As part of this blog, I’m going to upload three pictures from CA! All three were graciously given to us by TCM and were taking by their professional photographer. One is a picture of the 5 finalists and Hans Zimmer.(Goose-bumps!)
The second one is a beautiful picture of me and my wife shortly before the final award ceremony.
And the last picture is of the banquet hall where they held the ceremony. You can see they really went all out in decorating. That’s just a small sample of what an amazing job they did taking care of us.
